What Is Abhyanga? The Ancient Ritual of Self-Massage
In Ayurveda, daily rituals are more than gestures of beauty. They are moments of balance, presence and reconnection.
One of the most cherished of these rituals is Abhyanga, the practice of massaging the body with warm oil. Traditionally, Abhyanga is associated with nourishment, grounding and self-care. At SŌMA Atelier, we reinterpret this ancient ritual for modern life through texture, aroma and mindful touch.
A moment to slow down
Modern life moves quickly. Our routines are often rushed, functional and disconnected from the body.
Abhyanga invites the opposite.
A few drops of oil are warmed between the hands and massaged slowly onto the skin. The gesture is simple, but the intention behind it is powerful: to pause, to feel, to return to the body.
This is what makes the ritual meaningful. It is not only about applying oil. It is about creating a moment of presence.
Why oil?
Oil has always played an important role in Ayurvedic-inspired body rituals. Its texture encourages slow movement. Its warmth comforts the skin. Its aroma can help create a sense of calm.
A body oil can transform an ordinary moment after a shower or before sleep into something more sensorial and intentional.
How to practise an Abhyanga-inspired ritual
Warm a few drops of oil between your palms.
Massage slowly onto dry or slightly damp skin.
Begin with long movements over the arms and legs.
Use circular motions over joints.
Take your time over shoulders, chest, abdomen and feet.
Breathe slowly as you apply.
The ritual can be practised daily or a few times per week, depending on your lifestyle.
The SŌMA approach
SŌMA Atelier was created to bring ancient-inspired rituals into contemporary life.
Our Abhyanga Body Oil is designed as a sensorial body and massage ritual: nourishing in texture, elegant in aroma and refined in experience.
Because true luxury is not only how a product looks.
It is how it makes you feel.
